Acne Myths Information

Over time many acne myths have developed and still persist to this day. Some of the most common acne myths are listed below. Let us quickly dispel these common acne myths.

Acne is infectious: This is not true. It will not spread to other parts of the body, nor from one person to another.

Oily skin causes acne: Oily skin means that the sebaceous glands are draining well - the very opposite to the blocked ducts that cause acne.

Washing your face more often will help clear up acne: Facial blemishes are not caused by dirt. The walls of a pore stick together deep within the skin, starting acne formation. Far from preventing acne, frequent washing may actually irritate pores and cause them to become clogged. A washcloth can add even more irritation. The best bet is to wash very gently with bare hands, and only wash twice a day.

Blackheads are dirt: The dark colour of blackheads is due to the melanin pigment in skin cells, which darkens when exposed to air and light. Neither washing nor cleansers will remove it, and they are likely to make things worse.

Chocolate and other foods cause acne: It has been proven beyond doubt that diet has no effect on sebum production or acne.

Stress causes acne: Stress may have an effect on hormones and theoretically can promote acne. Seek the right course of acne treatment rather than feeling guilt about stress.

The sun will help get rid of acne: The sun may work in the short-term to hasten the clearing of existing acne while reddening your skin, thus blending your skin tone with red acne marks. However, a sun burn is actually skin damage. It's important to prevent damage to your skin while trying to get rid of acne. Sun exposure causes irritation which can make acne worse.
